Chapter 18

It was dark and the sky shone clear. Millions of bright stars twinkled above. We set up our shelters and started a fire. Adam, who hadn’t said much since the dragon landed, still kept to himself. He sat beside Joanna, staring at the flames licking the wood like a hungry animal. I had no way to guess his thoughts, but couldn’t help thinking of the man I knew. It occurred to me that time and choices really could change a person. Adam was proof of that.

Joanna seemed content, at peace even. I admired the way she handled all of life’s challenges. Nothing seemed to bother her. I wondered if it was because she had no fear or because she was crazy.

Christopher sat next to me, our backs facing Abernathy, who still slept. They hadn’t been able to kill a deer, or even find one, though Adam mentioned wolf and deer tracks. Adam and Joanna ate food from their packs. Chris and I didn’t have any, and that was okay. It wasn’t necessary.

Abernathy had mentioned celebrating my birthday, but he still slept, snoring softly as though he didn’t remember that we had plans. I’d heard plenty of stories from my mom about him over the years. For the dragon, sleeping wasn’t out of character.

Celebrating with Adam, Joanna, Abernathy, and Chris would be nice, but I wouldn’t mind if we didn’t celebrate at all. Nothing could compare to what Troy did for me. Making the unicorn blood cake and proposing marriage. My heart sank for a moment at the thought of him. How I missed him. But then I remembered the vision Laeddin showed me. He let me see my future. And what a future it would be. Everything was going to be okay. I would beat Sharra. I would marry Troy and we would have children.

My future seemed so bright in comparison to the present. But the only way to get there was by doing what had to be done here and now, and that meant getting the last two pieces of the crown.

A surge of urgency lifted me off my feet. “We should go,” I said startling the others, including Abernathy who lifted his head mid snore.

“It’s late,” Adam said. “We don’t want to travel in the dark, especially with the wolves so close.” He picked up a stick and stuck it in the fire, watching the end burn.

“Right, I get that, but Christopher and I can fly there on Abernathy.” I glanced at the dragon to see what he thought of the idea.

“I think we should wait until morning,” Abernathy said, smacking his lips.

“Fine. Then I think I’ll go to sleep.” I patted Christopher’s shoulder as I passed him.

“Hang on,” Abernathy said, readjusting. “I still need to give you your birthday present.”

Adam stood, pulling Joanna up with him as though he were threatened.

“What’s wrong, mi amour?” Joanna gave Adam a concerned look.

“Nothing. Just making sure that thing doesn’t squash you or burn you to a crisp.”

Abernathy barked a laugh.
